Slide 2: INNOVATIVE TRAINING FOR SUSTAINABLE SHEPHERDS<\/p>\n\n
This innovative and non-formal training model for shepherds is being carried out by 9 organisations from 7 partner countries and was developed within the project \u201cEU4Shepherds- INNOVATIVE TRAINING FOR SUSTAINABLE SHEPHERDS\u201d, co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.<\/p>\n\n
The countries participating in the project represent some of the most important territories in Europe for extensive livestock models. Spain and Portugal in the west, Scotland in the north, Romania and Bulgaria in the east or Austria (the Alps) together with Germany in central Europe.<\/p>\n\n
Slide 3: Extensive livestock management models are crucial for the sustainable maintenance of important rural areas in Europe. They promote ecological, social and economic sustainability as well as reducing depopulation in rural areas. They have a positive impact on animal wellbeing and human health compared to other non-extensive models. These models supply consumers with quality food products in many European territories and promote the sustainable development of our society.<\/p>\n\n
The future of such extensively managed livestock models is currently under threat due to the effects of climate change and other barriers (droughts, animal health problems, increase in parasites, administrative limitations for transhumance, etc...). They depend on the availability and capacity of extensive Shepherds. But the problem is that it is increasingly difficult to find well trained shepherds that have the knowledge and experience to face all the aspects involved in extensive livestock shepherding. Shepherds are an ageing social group in many countries, and the younger ones often lack proper training, education and experience. There is reduced motivation to become a shepherd due to social conditions and lack of specific professional training opportunities. Shepherds and sheep keepers \u2013 the key actors essential for extensive livestock management \u2013 carry out many important but undervalued functions in rural, disadvantaged and under populated areas.<\/p>\n\n
Although they are an important element in rural societies, shepherds often lack social recognition. In many cases they don\u2019t have access to well-structured, methodical and validated training for the sustainable management of extensive systems. The current project idea arose from a needs analysis of the existing situation. The most important problems, among others include:<\/p>\n\n
\n\t
Difficulties in finding professional shepherds.<\/li>\n\t
Lack of more structured and updated training and education offers adapted to current needs and threats, as well as adapted flexible training tools for current or future Shepherds.<\/li>\n\t
Lack of motivation to become a shepherd.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

Slide 4: The EU4Shepherds Project seeks to improve and update the training offer for extensive shepherds to ensure a sustainable future for extensive management systems & their economic, social and environmental benefits by developing tools to build resilience in the sector. It addresses current administrative barriers, emerging threats (climate change scenarios and their consequences) and opportunities (organic and local food trends, locally sourced materials, traditional skills, agro tourism, etc\u2026)<\/p>\n\n
The project aims to develop a work-based learning system for both trainers and trainees which considers current barriers and logistical problems for extensive shepherds (many of whom live in rural and isolated areas) in order to ensure the sustainability of the profession and of extensive livestock models.<\/p>\n\n
The project also provides an easy to use training platform designed for extensive shepherds which promotes the use of digital tools for training.<\/p>\n\n
The project objectives are to develop:<\/p>\n\n

New curricula for professional shepherds.<\/li>\n\t
New flexible training methodology for trainers.<\/li>\n\t
New on-line adapted training platform for extensive shepherds<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n

Slide 5: Overview of Shepherding & Training in Scotland<\/p>\n\n
Scotland has a wide range of training opportunities for sheep keepers of all ages and backgrounds. This project will outline the main elements of a sheep keeping curriculum for the 21st century and point the way to best practice and further training opportunities.<\/p>\n\n
Shepherds and shepherd trainers across Europe are also sharing their own experiences, training practices and best practice which you can also access through this Project.<\/p>\n\n
Scotland has a wide range of formal and informal training organisations, associations, and networks as well as access to funding for training. Find links to some of these organisations below.<\/p>\n\n

Slide 6: Modules 1, 2 & 3<\/p>\n\n
Module 1 outlines some of the issues related to managing sheep sustainably to conserve biodiversity and to provide ecosystems services.<\/p>\n\n
Module 2 highlights the main elements of animal management including grazing, feeding, animal health & management techniques.<\/p>\n\n
Module 3 provides advice on risk management and safety practices for shepherds and sheep keeping.<\/p>\n\n

Slide 7: Modules 4, 5, 6<\/p>\n\n
Module 4 outlines all the key legal requirements involved in the keeping of sheep and the production of sheep products.<\/p>\n\n
Module 5 provides information on the selection of sheep breeds including rare breeds and links to the different sheep societies.<\/p>\n\n
Module 6 highlights some of the main issues in protection of livestock including issues around dogs and large raptors.

Slide 8: Modules 7, 8, 9
\nModule 7 outlines the main legislation around animal welfare, the 5 freedoms of animal welfare and links to the Scotland Code of Practice for keeping sheep.<\/p>\n\n
Module 8 explores the possible business goals and aims of sheep keeping including meat, wool, dairy and grazing management<\/p>\n\n
Module 9 highlights case studies of marketing different sheep products in Scotland.<\/p>\n\n

Module 10 explores some communication tools for engaging with the public and for developing markets and customer bases.<\/p>\n\n
Module 11 highlights some examples of using digital tools to improve sheep keeping including digital record keeping (SCOTEID), a training app (SKILLSEEDER) and a biodiversity, carbon & ecosystem app to provide a baseline and improve access to grants (SABBIO).<\/p>\n\n
